Cornerstone CE Primary School, Hampshire
What did the school want to achieve?
As part of a new residential development in Whiteley, and as a brand-new school, Cornerstone CE Primary School were keen to develop the school grounds in partnership with the children. With a lovely modern, well-resourced building, they were keen to increase opportunities and provide a wide range of activities for their children to enjoying playing outside, supporting their physical and social development.
How did we help them achieve their desired outcome? Were there any problems, and how did we overcome them?
To give Cornerstone CE Primary the playground it deserved, we worked with the school’s Headteacher, Tim Clarke, to select the best playground games for meeting their objectives. We ended up installing a variety of different playground markings to assist with literacy, numeracy, physical activity, and other skills.
The school now has an engaging Safari Phonics design, customised with ‘Cornerstone Zoo’ to help children learn their sounds, and animals too! For practising counting and mathematics, they have a new 1-100 Number Grid bursting with colour, ready for any maths games.
To keep their year groups entertained, they also chose some fun playground games including Duck Duck Goose, a 4-Way Hopscotch and a Dance with Me game. Last but not least, to promote physical activity, they chose two fun trail activities for children to follow and practise different movements.
All the above will not only benefit the pupils’ physical health but their mental health too, since playing outside in the fresh air is always a welcome break from the classroom. Plus, they will be able to make and build friendships when they interact with each other in their new playground.
Our comments on the finished playground
It was a pleasure working on the playground at Cornerstone CE Primary School. It’s always very rewarding to see new playgrounds go from a blank canvas to an exciting environment with endless opportunities for fun play and learning! We hope all the children attending the school from the new residential area will enjoy their new playground games.
Testimonial from the school
“The quality of the playground markings is excellent, and the colourful designs highly engaging for the children. There were no problems / issues with any part of the process with Fun and Active, and we found all the staff we liaised with to be very helpful and professional.”
