Why not involve a group of children in the design process?
From school council reps to learning mentor groups, class reps and prefects, we always look forward to hearing children’s ideas.
Choosing The Right Type Of Basketball Court Design
There are four different types of official basketball court designs: secondary school, college, international full and NBA full.
Our collection includes two types of NBA style-court line markings plus multi-sport court markings. Our simpler design follows the layout for secondary school basketball courts whilst the more complex line markings are similar to the designs used for international and NBA full basketball courts.
For KS1 and KS2, primary schools find the simpler design is sufficient. For some secondary schools, the more complex design adds the extra layer of challenge they desire.

Multi-Sport Basketball Court Designs
Why not combine basketball court markings with football and netball court lines?
For schools and other busy children’s settings, multi-sport court markings are essential. Enabling the same space to be used for various sports, multi-court lines transform a single space into a multi-purpose court that can be enjoyed by lots of different children.
Our custom design service means we can layer up your basketball court lines with any combination of sports you choose. The basketball court design usually sits on the top of the two layers because it’s commonly the fastest of the three sports.
Which Sports Surface Coating Is Best For Outdoor Basketball Courts?
Options to suit every need means we provide a choice of 3 different surface coatings for outdoor basketball courts. All 3 are safe and non-slip.
Exceptional Performance
Thermoplastic is the highest-performing option for sports surfacing. Thermoplastic playground surfacing is resistant to abrasions and all types of weather. From scratches and scuffs to uv-light, children can use our outdoor basketball courts all year round.
Whether rain, wind, or sun, you can be sure your courts will remain bright, colourful, and clearly visible. Free from fading and depletion, thermoplastic surfaces are prized for their ability to last up to 10 times longer than traditional playground paint.
Non-toxic, environmentally-friendly, and robust, thermoplastic offers the highest level of endurance ideal for busy children’s play spaces. You can choose from a wide range of 26 vibrant colours which can be applied to just about any playground surface, including asphalt, tarmac, and concrete.
With so many options available, you can get really creative and install a personalised court surface design that adds character and excitement to the space.
Sports Coating
For smaller budgets, our Sports Coating is a good alternative. Sports Coating is a hardwearing material used on sports courts, play spaces and other outdoo0r areas across the UK.
Its hardwearing properties make Sports Coating ideal for the UK’s variable weather. Fast-drying and easy to apply, Sports Coating can be used to cover a range of outdoor surfaces.
Offering superb endurance, we recommend Sports Coating as an alternative to thermoplastic particularly if you have historic surface damage to cover. You can choose from 12 vivid colours guaranteed to make your playground a bright, welcoming place.
Using Playground Paint
The third option is top quality, non-slip playground paint. If you have a larger area to cover but don’t have the budget for thermoplastic, our high-quality playground paint will deliver all you need.
Playground paint comes in a much smaller array of colours but each of the 7 options are bright and bold so you can still create an appealing outdoor play space.

Basketball Court Sizes
What size is a standard basketball court?
A standard UK basketball court should measure 28m in length and 15m in width.
For schools and community groups, Sport England recommends basketball courts of at least 26m in length and 14m in width. Sport England classes these smaller courts as community courts for schools and other community spaces. The minimum total area of the court should be at least 364m2.
Basketball Court Line Dimensions
Recommended widths for court lines from Sport England are 5cm. The centre circle should have a 3.6m diameter whilst the mid-court line should be positioned 14m from the end line on each side.
Locate the free throw line 4.6m from the backboard. Recommended dimensions for basketball backboards are 1.8m x 1.22m with a 19mm thickness. Whether you choose a wall-hinged, ceiling-mounted, or free-standing net stand, the backboard should have padding with a grading of at least U16.
How will you apply these dimensions to your space?
The Fun & Active Playgrounds design team are ready to help. Our experienced team can help you create the perfect design for your space with all the right markings in the right place. Adjusting dimensions to suit your space, we’ll create an exciting, accurate court design for your community.

Basketball Court Timers
In NBA-style games there are two clocks in operation.
The game clock tracks the length of each quarter which is 12 minutes long. There are four quarters in a game. You may choose to follow college basketball times which can be spread over two halves for speed or secondary school basketball which has four quarters lasting 8 minutes each.
The second clock is the shot clock. The shot clock monitors how long the ball is held before a shot is made. The ball can be held for a maximum of 24 seconds. If the team have not shot the ball by the time the 24 seconds are up, the ball is passed to the other team.
Browse our collection of outdoor timers to find the perfect clock for your basketball court. The PlayTronic stop watch is a solar-powered design with easy touch start and stop buttons, plus a large reset button so tracking shot possession is easy.
The eco-friendly solar-powered design comes with a 3-year warranty and large LCD display. With time ticking, children will be motivated to put their problem-solving skills to good use. Thinking quickly about the best strategies and shots to use to ensure their team scores before the time is up is a great way to keep everyone engaged and working hard throughout the game.
Basketball Court Design Checklist
What to include in outdoor basketball design:
Centre Circle
The centre circle is sometimes called the jump circle. This important line marking has the midcourt line running directly through its centre.

Also known as boundary lines, baseline markings are located at either end of the court underneath the basketball hoop.
Sidelines
Sidelines are positioned along the two lengths of the basketball court.
Midcourt Line
The midcourt line marking splits the court equally into two halves. The two halves are known as the frontcourt and backcourt.
Three Point Line
The arcs which stretch towards the centre circle from either end of the court are each known as the three-point line.
Other basketball court markings to include:
Free Throw Lane
Low Blocks
Hash Marks
