Locks Heath Infant School, Hampshire
What did the school want to achieve?
Locks Heath Infant School in Warsash, Southampton, were looking for ways to enhance their outdoor learning provision. They recently had their KS1 playground resurfaced, but there were no markings on it for their children to use – a total blank canvas. The school had also identified what would be useful for their Early Years children; a road for using bikes and trikes on, phonics sounds for interactive phonics sessions, and a number line to encourage active learning.
How did we help them achieve their desired outcome? Were there any problems, and how did we overcome them?
The school had made a “shopping list” of all the markings they wanted, so that when the site survey took place, we could look at what markings should go where in order to get the most out of their space. The design team then put this together to create a realistic visual of exactly how the two playgrounds would look.
We had to navigate the space available in the Early Years playground. The school had seen our Under the Sea Phonics design, though being a large circle shape, it would have been tricky to fit in the available space. We suggested an alternative Phonics Pond design which we were able to adapt to the shape of the area. A similar adaption was made with the roadway at the other end of the Early Years playground.
At the time, the school were not aware that they could use their Sport Premium funding to pay for playground markings, and so once they knew, it meant that they could get everything they wanted.
Our comments on the finished playground
The two playgrounds at Locks Heath Infant School have been a wonderful project to work on. Going from a completely blank tarmacked area, to a colourful environment that encourages their children to run wild, learn and have fun with their friends with all the new games. The school were a pleasure to work with and we hope the markings are enjoyed for many years to come.
