Objective: The aim of Piggy in the Middle is for the players on the outside to pass the ball to each other without the “Piggy in the Middle” catching it. If the Piggy catches the ball, they swap places with the player who threw it. An ideal for promoting active play and practising ball skills within primary schools!
1. Gather a group of at least three players.
2. Ask children to volunteer themselves to be the “Piggy in the Middle.” The other players form a circle or stand a few metres apart from each other, with the Piggy standing in the middle.
3. You’ll need a ball that’s easy to throw and catch (e.g. a lightweight playground ball or bouncy ball).
Start the Game:
• The players on the outside pass the ball to each other, trying to keep it away from the Piggy in the Middle.
• The Piggy tries to intercept or catch the ball.
Passing the Ball:
• Passes can be made by throwing, rolling, or bouncing the ball, depending on the group’s skill level.
• Players on the outside should work together to trick the Piggy, using quick throws and strategic movements.
The Piggy’s Goal:
• The Piggy’s job is to catch the ball or touch it before it reaches the other player.
• If the Piggy succeeds, they swap places with the player who last touched the ball.
Swapping Roles:
• The player who becomes the new Piggy moves to the middle, and the game continues.
1. The ball must be passed fairly (no excessively high throws or deliberately throwing out of reach).
2. The Piggy must stay within the designated area and cannot grab or push other players.
3. Players on the outside must not hold the ball for too long to keep the game fair and active.
4. If the ball is dropped without interference from the Piggy, play resumes with the same Piggy.
• Adjust the size of the circle to match the skill level of the players (smaller for younger children, larger for advanced players).
• Use gentle throws for younger children to keep the game inclusive.
• Encourage teamwork and quick thinking among the players on the outside.
