Fun Playground Markings For Little Learners
Updated on: February 7, 2024
Our road track playground markings are one of the best resources around for EYFS outdoor areas because they make it easy transform to the space into a rich learning environment.
Roadway playground markings blend imaginary play with real-life learning to create a play space which promotes more than just physical activity.
Road tracks, traffic lights, zebra crossings and more allow you to install an exciting outdoor environment that’s safe, fun, and educational.
From creative thinking to communication and personal, social, and emotional skills, the installation of a roadway design in your playground will benefit EYFS and KS1 children in lots of different ways.
Let’s take a closer look at what roadway markings are and how they can benefit young children’s development.
What Are Road Track Playground Markings?
We all know how much young children enjoy whizzing around an EYFS playground on a tricycle or scooter, but it can be hazardous for everyone around them.
Our road track playground markings provide the perfect solution by giving young children a roadway to ride on which looks like the real thing!
The road track collection offers a huge range of flexibility in how you use the markings.
You can install our full roadway design which includes roadways, zebra crossings, traffic lights, buildings, road signs and more. Alternatively, you create your own custom design which uses your choice of roadways, traffic lights and more.
This level of flexibility means our roadway playground markings can be used in nursery, EYFS and KS1 playgrounds of any size. You can add as much or as little as you choose to the road track and have the roadway laid out in any way you wish. See roadway markings
We even have realistic road signs which can be added to external walls.

Fun Playground Markings For Little Learners
1. Imaginary Play
By presenting children with roadway markings that look realistic, you can provide them with wonderful tools for imaginary play.
Roads, traffic lights, buildings and more will give children visual reminders of past experiences and observations. By engaging in role play and fantasy play, children will build an important understanding of their world.
As they retell stories and act out things they’ve seen and heard, young children use imaginary play to explore a wide range of concepts, experiences, and emotions.
Each scenario teaches children about how to navigate the world in which they live.
In the words of the DFE, imaginary play provides children with a resource through which to respond to all ‘they see, hear, feel and experience’.
2. Social & Emotional Skills
As children explore these observations, feelings, and stories, they develop a wide variety of emotional skills.
The installation of traffic light and pedestrian crossing markings, for example, will mean children need to stop and wait for peers to pass.
Learning to be patient and considerate towards others in a real-life setting provides a much more powerful lesson for children.
By building respect for others and empathy for other people’s experiences and priorities, you’ll help to make your outdoor areas and the wider school or nursery community a nicer place to be.
As children grow, these important real-life skills will help them to become the responsible and caring citizens we want them to be.

3. Communication Skills
The presence of the road track creates clear rules for use of your outdoor area.
From visible boundaries to our colourful stop, look and listen reminders, all children will be clear about the rules which must be followed during outdoor play.
As the BBC outlines in their citizenship resources for schools, it’s important that children learn rules so everyone stays safe and receives fair treatment.
By establishing clear rules for your outdoor space, children will be able to build a range of communication skills as they apologise, negotiate and compromise to ensure the rules are obeyed.
4. Road Safety
Children’s understanding of safety and responsibility will extend to their ability to cross the road safely.
Road safety is an important part of citizenship education for children of all ages.
According to research compiled by the UK Parliament, traffic accidents in the UK involving children are particularly high. In 2000 alone, more than 3000 children were killed or seriously injured due to road traffic accidents.
We want to ensure all children have a clear understanding of road safety as early as possible. That’s why roadway markings at Fun & Active Playgrounds incorporate the Green Cross Code, realistic road signs and more.
As children play on our markings, they’ll learn crucial lessons about how to cross the road safely.
5. Cognitive Development & STEM Learning
From understanding how and when to slow down to navigating the roadway design, road tracks give children lots of practical experience of science and maths learning.
The range of practical problems and social dilemmas encountered plus the need for planning and spatial awareness, means our road track markings will help children to develop a range of cognitive skills.
And we haven’t even touched on the physical skills children will gain as they build: balance, co-ordination, muscle strength, stamina, and fine and gross motor skills whilst they play.
