How to use playground markings to celebrate this Halloween

Halloween is a much-loved occasion amongst children, both younger and older – whether they like to dress up and go on a search for sweets and treats around their neighbourhood, snuggle up at home and watch a scary movie, or have a go at pumpkin carving. Why not start the seasonal fun at school and adapt some of your favourite activities to celebrate? We’ve come up with a few ideas below to get you in a spook-tacular mood!
Creepy Costume Relay Race
Try your hand at a creepy costume relay race and see who’s the fastest team! Encourage your students to wear fancy dress – be it a vampire, witch, wizard, skeleton, ghost, zombie, fairy-tale creature or anything they like! Put them in to four teams and use our running track or bleep test playground marking to race up and down the track, taking it in turns to go. Whichever team of little monsters finishes first, wins!
This game is a great idea to play during breaktimes or in PE lessons. Not only will it spark excitement for Halloween, but also help to keep students active as well as practising their team building skills.
Marvellous Monster Mirror Me
Lift your spirits with our Marvellous Monster Mirror Me game! Organise your pupils into groups of 4 or 6 when using our Mirror Me playground marking with 3 or 5 stations. Each student can stand on their footprints and then choose one person (child or teacher!) to stand in the circle at the front, acting as the leader. Here, they can do their best monster impressions and make different movements and noises that the rest of the group then have to copy. You can create sequences with the movements and if a student gets the movement wrong, they’re out and another child can take their place.
This activity can be played without the playground marking too and with more or less pupils. It’s a great way to improve on memory, co-ordination and co-operative play skills!
Broomstick Flying Obstacle Course
Create an arena in your playground and use our trail playground markings as an obstacle course for broomstick flying! This activity is best for exercising your imagination as young witches and wizards hop on their broomsticks and see how fast they can fly around the trail.
With movements such as jump, skip, hop, climb, crawl and sprint, you can encourage children to imagine they are flying over and under, dodging obstacles and whizzing to the finish line.
Spooky Spelling Bee
The spellbinding activity is sure to improve your pupils’ literacy skills! Prepare a list of Halloween related words – all things spooky, ghoulish and fang-tastic. Let your students have some time to learn the words before venturing outside to the playground and spelling the words on one of our letter playground markings.
Children can line up around the marking, and take it in turns to hop to each letter, spelling out the wicked words as they go. This is a healthy way to encourage some competition too as the pupil who spells the most words correctly, wins.
