Why EV bay markings are important?
Picture this: it’s a busy morning at your school, and parents are dropping off their kids while teachers are rushing to their classrooms. In the midst of this hustle and bustle, electric vehicle (EV) owners are trying to find a spot to charge their cars. Without clear markings designating EV bays, it can be extremely stressful.
That’s where EV bay markings step in and save the day. These markings are not just colourful lines on the pavement; they’re the unsung heroes of your school’s charging infrastructure. They’re like signposts guiding EV drivers to their charging oasis amidst the chaos of the car park.
Ever played the game of “find the needle in the haystack”? That’s what it feels like for EV drivers without proper markings. But with clearly designated EV bays, it’s more like a treasure hunt with a map – quick, easy, and stress-free.
Now, let’s explore the treasure trove of benefits that come with having these markings in your school’s car park.
5 Benefits of having EV bay markings in you school car park
1. Enhanced Efficiency
With clearly marked EV bays, drivers can quickly identify available charging spots, reducing the time spent searching for parking and expediting the charging process. This efficiency is particularly valuable during peak periods when demand for charging may be high.
2. Improved Organisation
EV bay markings facilitate orderly parking arrangements, preventing haphazard placement of vehicles around charging stations. This organised approach not only enhances the visual appeal of your car park but also promotes a smoother traffic flow and minimises congestion.
3. Increased Accessibility
By reserving specific spaces for EVs, markings ensure that these vehicles have dedicated areas for charging, eliminating the risk of non-electric vehicles occupying charging bays. This accessibility is vital for EV owners who rely on convenient access to charging infrastructure.
4. Support for Sustainability
Prominently marked EV bays signal your school’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the adoption of clean transportation technologies. By encouraging the use of electric vehicles, you contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting eco-friendly practices within your community.
5. Enhanced Safety
Well-defined EV bay markings contribute to a safer parking environment by reducing the likelihood of conflicts or accidents arising from unclear parking arrangements. Pedestrians and drivers alike benefit from the improved visibility and organisation provided by these markings.
In summary, the presence of EV bay markings in your school’s car park offers a multitude of benefits, ranging from increased efficiency and organisation to support for sustainability and safety. By investing in clear and distinct markings, you not only optimise the functionality of your charging infrastructure but also demonstrate your school’s commitment to promoting cleaner, greener transportation options.

Answers to common EV bay marking questions
How long do thermoplastic EV bay markings last?
Thermoplastic EV bay markings can last in excess of 10 years and certainly a lot longer than painted markings. All our thermoplastic markings come with a 4 year warranty for installations on tarmac.
How long does the installation process typically take and what disruptions can we expect during this time?
The time taken for installation will depend on how many EV bay markings are being installed and what condition the surface is in. As a guide, it can take around 15 minutes to install each bay marking.
How are thermoplastic EV bay markings installed?
Thermoplastic EV bay markings are heat applied to the ground. Before using a propane lance to heat them until they have bonded, we mark out and prime the area to seal the surface to ensure a long-lasting finish.
What materials are used for the markings and how durable are they against weather and heavy traffic?
At Fun & Active Playgrounds, we use the highest quality preformed thermoplastic to create our EV bay markings. This material is superior when it comes to marking playgrounds, roads and car parks, and though it’s not the cheapest method, it comes out on top when it comes to enduring the weather and heavy traffic.
Our preformed thermoplastic has a built-in anti-slip bead to give it a high slip-resistance throughout its lifespan. The colours are also UV resistant meaning the colours won’t fade. In general, thermoplastic markings last up to ten times longer than painted markings.
Are there any incentives or grants available to help cover the costs of installing EV bay markings in school car parks?
Schools, colleges, nurseries, and academies can cover the costs of EV infrastructure by applying for funding through the Workplace Charging Scheme. This includes the marking of the EV bays. You may also be able to apply for the EV infrastructure grant. See more on School Grants available for EV Charge Points
How much are thermoplastic EV bay markings?
We can create EV bay markings in different sizes, colours, and designs. Each of these may affect the overall cost. However, a standard solid 1m EV bay marking costs approximately £150, whereas smaller 800mm outline options can cost as little at £50 per bay marking.
Can I design my own bespoke EV bay marking?
Yes! We provide a completely bespoke service for all the schools and organisations we work with. Our talented in-house designers can take your ideas and create a completely custom design unique to your school. Explore our Bespoke Playground Marking Service
What’s included in the price of EV bay markings?
The cost of our EV bay markings includes a design service, manufacturing, installation, travel, any necessary overnight stays depending on location, general cleaning where the new markings are being installed, and any revisits due to delays outside of our control e.g. poor weather.
Can you remove old car park markings?
New thermoplastic markings cannot be installed directly onto old markings, they won’t last! We highly recommend removing any old bay markings before installing new ones. Marking removal is a service we can help with too! See more on our Playground Marking Removals
Are there any specific dimensions or guidelines we need to follow for the markings?
There are no specific guidelines for EV bay markings. If you’re thinking of getting your bay line marking done at the same time, the dimensions of each space should be at least 2.4m in width and 4.8m in height.

How our thermoplastic markings are sustainable
Now, let’s talk about sustainability – because being eco-friendly isn’t just a trend; it’s a responsibility we all share. At Fun & Active Playgrounds, we take pride in not only providing high quality EV bay markings but also ensuring that our solutions contribute to a greener future.
Our thermoplastic markings aren’t just durable; they’re sustainable too. And here’s why that matters: as we work towards promoting greener transportation with EV infrastructure, it only makes sense for the materials used to support that infrastructure to be environmentally conscious as well.
Let’s break it down with some stats:
- More than 50% of the energy used to manufacture the thermoplastic material comes from renewable sources like windmills.
- More than 70% of the binder material is made from renewable resources.
- More than 90% of our glass beads are made of recycled glass.
- All coloured pigments used in our thermoplastic are organic.
- Less than 1.5% of the production volume of preformed thermoplastic is allowed as waste.
- Less than 1L of water is used per ton of thermoplastic produced.
Less than 2% of CO2 is produced per kg of thermoplastic, meaning only 90 grams of CO2 is produced in the manufacturing of enough material to make one of our standard 1m EV bay markings!
