Perton Primary Academy, West Midlands
What did the school want to achieve?
Perton Primary Academy, in Wolverhampton, had a huge outdoor space for play and knew they wanted to improve it. Their main aim was to promote a healthy lifestyle for their students and to provide plenty of opportunities for them to express themselves by learning and taking part in exercise. They worked with Staffordshire University Academies Trust to help raise the funds they needed. Once they had their playground resurfaced, they wanted to introduce activities that encouraged their children to get outside and play.
How did we help them achieve their desired outcome? Were there any problems, and how did we overcome them?
With such a large, blank space, the potential was endless and the school ended up choosing an abundance of different games and markings for their play area. For encouraging physical activity, we installed a Mile a Day track, 2 Netball Courts, an Active Trail, and an Active Spot Circuit. For fun outdoor learning, we used a 0-20 Snake, A-Z Dragon, a Grid marking, Solar System, Maths Target, a Compass Clock and a World Map with oceans. Finally, for entertainment we installed several games including 3 different Hopscotches, a Roadway, Dance With Me, Mr Wolf, a Dartboard with throw lines, Noughts and Crosses, Twister, and a Space Maze! We were able to advise where each game should go in order to make the most of their space.
Our team were there for 3 days and had to overcome the challenges of English weather. Despite it being April, we braved very cold temperatures and even the occasional shower of snow! Though this didn’t stop us from getting the project finished on time.
Our comments on the finished playground
We were so pleased to be able to help Perton Primary Academy with this project. There were so many designs and games involved, the playground looks fabulous! We spent 3 days at the school to complete the job and we loved seeing it come together day by day. Although the weather was challenging with a mixture of sunshine, strong winds, rain and even snow, we really enjoyed turning this playground into an area filled with opportunities for play and learning.
