Playground Marking Removals
A Guide to Playground Marking Removals
Are you looking to remove your old, worn, and faded playground markings? If so, we can help you take this first step towards clearing the canvas ready for new, bright playground markings to be installed.
Playgrounds are vibrant spaces where children’s imaginations run wild, but, over time, the colourful playground markings that once adorned the playground surface may begin to fade, flake away, or no longer serve their intended purpose. When these markings become worn or outdated, it’s crucial to restore the playground to its full potential, ensuring a safe and stimulating environment for all children to enjoy.
At Fun & Active Playgrounds, we understand the significance of maintaining playground surfaces in pristine condition. Our playground marking removals service offers a comprehensive solution to refresh your playground, creating a surface that can be transformed into a vibrant space once again.
In this article, we will delve into all the essential aspects you need to know about our playground marking removals service, from the process itself to the benefits it provides. We’ll cover the following:
- Pricing and Cost Considerations
- The Process and Problems of Playground Marking Removals
- Vapour Blasting Vs Other Removal Methods
- Best UK Playground Marking Removal Companies
By the end, you’ll have a complete understanding of what’s involved in the playground marking removals process and of the investment needed for your project in order to achieve the best result.
The Importance of Playground Marking Removals
Removing old or faded thermoplastic markings is essential for both aesthetic and safety purposes. If your playground markings have faded or flaked away, they could pose a potential hazard to your children, parents, school staff and visitors.
Playground markings can be used to direct and organise foot traffic. If these have worn away, you risk people walking into areas they shouldn’t. Similarly, if children are playing games in the playground, they may not be able to follow the markings as easily which could mean more bumps and more activities colliding.
As well as this, faded markings won’t inspire and encourage your children to be as active in the playground. If the designs have worn away, your play area won’t be as visually appealing, and children won’t be as enthusiastic to learn and play. This is not only important in terms of play time and breaks, but also during PE lessons. If your sports court lines have worn away, boundaries will be unclear, and children won’t be able to stick to the rules of the game as easily.
By removing your old markings, and getting them replaced with new ones, you’ll be sure to create a safe and engaging playground environment for your pupils.
Pricing and Cost Considerations
How much are Playground Marking Removals?
Our vapour removals are charged on a day rate. Pricing is £2500+VAT for one day and £4000+VAT for two. Most removal projects are completed in one day and are often carried out on a weekday. However, we can book removals in during weekends if this better suits your school’s requirements.
What factors influence the pricing of thermoplastic playground marking removals?
It is predominantly the amount of playground markings that are to be removed that will influence the pricing of our service. Although our vapour removals service is charged on a day rate, if it’s a large project that can’t be completed in one day, then charges for the additional days will apply.
For small amounts of removal only, we can use a different method to vapour blasting called Heat & Scrape. The cost of this removal method is £100 per hour, and it can only be used on thermoplastic material or screed. Heat & Scrape removals are capped at 2 hours due to its intense labour, and we will only offer this method if new markings are being installed directly over the top, since this method results in more surface scarring.
One other factor that can affect the cost is the water pressure. We require a minimum of 20L per minute. The lower the water pressure, the longer the service will take to be completed, and again, if that means the project rolls into a second day, the cost will increase.
Are there any additional costs for traveling to specific locations or working during weekends or holidays?
Our removals service is available to book across 7 days. If your school or site is located particularly further away from us, additional charges may apply. Our team will be able to advise accordingly.
Are the prices inclusive of all necessary equipment, materials, and labour required for the removal process?
Yes, our prices include all equipment, travel, labour, any necessary overnight stays, as well as a general cleaning of the playground to remove surface debris and dirt in preparation for the removals.
Are there any hidden costs or extra charges that customers should be aware of?
There are few ways in which additional charges could apply. That is:
– If you require a thorough surface clean in preparation for new markings or playground paints. This would cost £1500+VAT.
– If we are unable to complete the removals within the estimated timeframe and have to return on another day, this would incur an extra pre-agreed reduced cost of £1250+VAT.
What payment options are available for thermoplastic playground marking removal services?
Payment for your playground marking removals is due on completion of the works and payable to our sister company, TPMR Ltd (Thermoplastic Playground Marking Removals). We will provide a separate invoice for this on company headed paper.
Are there any warranties or guarantees provided for the quality and durability of the removal work?
We will ensure all removals are carried out with care and to the manufacturer’s specification. Although vapour blasting may cause some scarring to the playground surface, we will do everything we can to minimise this. All employees are DBS checked too.
Are there any long-term cost considerations, such as the need for regular maintenance or future re-marking?
Vapour blasting may cause some scarring to your playground surface and the level of damage will vary depending on the surface type, age, condition, and aggregate size. You may want to consider further works to improve the aesthetic of your playground surface before installing new markings, to get the best result possible.
The Process and Problems of Playground Marking Removals
What method do you use to remove playground markings?
There are many methods available for removing playground markings, but we find the best and most effective method to be Vapour blasting. Ask our friendly team for advice on the best method for your playground surface.
How does vapour blasting work?
A specially formulated abrasive media is mixed with a small amount of water, pressurised in a pressure pot, and blasted through a nozzle mixed with compressed air. This process ensures minimal airborne dust as each piece of media, approx. 1mm wide, is encapsulated by the water.
Whilst you will be able to faintly see where the old markings were, this technique leaves a lot less scarring than alternative methods such as hydro blasting.
What’s involved in the process of playground marking removals?
Our innovative techniques and state-of-the-art equipment ensure an efficient and thorough removal procedure. Read on through our step-by-step process to find out what’s involved in removing playground markings, including surface preparation, and removal techniques.
On Arrival
First, our removals team will drive the equipment onto the playground. They will look for the water access previously highlighted by your school and set up the vapour blasting machine.
During the Removals Process
If the playground markings are made of thermoplastic, the team will chip off as much of the markings as possible before vapour-blasting them. Otherwise, the removals process will begin with the first operative vapour blasting the markings, and the second operative following behind, starting to clean the playground with a jet wash.
Once all the markings have been removed, both operatives will work together to clean and jet wash the playground. All waste will then be disposed of off-site, unless agreed otherwise.
On Completion
Afterwards, the team will do one final inspection to check everything has been successfully removed and thoroughly cleaned. We will then break down our equipment and be on our way.
Can you adapt your playground marking removals service to different playgrounds?
Yes, we can provide customised solutions for every playground. Our tailored solutions mean we can adapt our service to various playground sizes, layouts, and design complexities. Our state-of-the-art removals machine is mobile and so allows us to remove markings in smaller areas.
What measures are taken to minimise disruption to the neighbouring properties during the removal process?
Vapour blasting is naturally noisy so can be completed on a weekend if necessary. We would advise making any close neighbours aware of this in advance. To help, we will send you a notification of noise letter to distribute prior to the scheduled removals date.
What type of markings can you remove?
We can remove all playground, car park and road markings made from thermoplastic material, screed, and playground paint including Methacrylate Cold Plastic (MMA).
Will playground marking removals damage my playground?
All methods of playground marking removals will damage the surface to an extent, however, vapour blasting will do so with the most minimal scarring to the surrounding surface as well as the surface directly underneath.
How precise are your playground marking removals?
Very! Our state-of-the-art removals machine permits extreme precision allowing us to be as precise as down to 2-3cm, meaning damage to surrounding surfaces is avoided.
What is needed for successful playground marking removals?
Good Water Access
In order to make sure we can adequately clean the playground, we will require access to an external tapped water supply with a water flow rate of 20 litres per minute.
Vehicle & Trailer Access
We will need access directly onto the playground for our van and trailer, as well as access to power within 60m of the outside water supply.
How do you ensure that the removal process does not leave any residue or remnants of the old markings behind?
Our method ensures minimal airborne dust as each piece of media, approx. 1mm wide, is encapsulated by the water. Our removals team will also clean up and dispose of any waste off-site afterwards.
