Description
How to Play King Square (Four Square)
Objective: The aim of King Square is to stay in or move up to the “King” square by following the rules and eliminating other players.
Setup:
1. Use a playground marking of a large square divided into four smaller numbered squares (typically labelled 1, 2, 3, and King or 4).
2. You’ll need a bouncy ball, such as a playground ball.
3. Up to 4 players can play at a time, with one player in each square. Additional players can wait in line as “challengers.”
How to Play:
Positioning:
• Each player starts in one of the four squares.
• The highest-ranking square is King (or square 4), followed by 3, 2, and the lowest-ranking square is 1.
Starting the Game:
• The King serves the ball by bouncing it once in their square and hitting it into another player’s square.
• The ball must bounce only once in the receiving player’s square before they hit it.
Gameplay:
• Players take turns hitting the ball into another player’s square.
• The ball must stay in bounds and bounce only once in the targeted square before being returned.
• Players can use their hands to hit the ball but not hold, carry, or catch it.
Eliminating Players:
A player is “out” and must move to the back of the line if:
• They fail to hit the ball into another square.
• The ball bounces more than once in their square.
• They hit the ball out of bounds or before it bounces in their square.
Advancing Squares:
• When a player is out, everyone below their square moves up (e.g. from 3 to King, or 2 to 3).
• The player in the front of the line enters at square 1.
Winning the Game:
• The objective is to stay in the King square for as long as possible.
• For continuous play, players aim to eliminate others and rotate positions, keeping the game fun and competitive.
Rules:
1. The ball must bounce only once in a square before being hit.
2. Players cannot hit the ball twice in a row (no double hits).
3. The King sets the rules for special variations (e.g. no spins or two-handed hits only).
4. The game resets if the King is eliminated.
Tips for Fair Play:
• Encourage everyone to take turns fairly and stay engaged.
• Players in lower squares can use strategy to challenge higher-ranked players.
• Keep the ball at a manageable speed to include younger or less experienced players.
